My first experience gave me pause about the company. I was following a trend with the Senegalese Twist. The owner suggested that I get the box braids, yet, I didnt pay her any attention as I wanted the Senegalese Twist. After just one week many of my twist came out. I contacted the owner to let her know and she explained to me that I could come back to get another hair style at a discounted price. I left the situation with a bitter taste in my mouth and washed my hands with the situation.

A year later I had come to the realization that it was me that refused to take advice on getting the Senegalese Twist and for that is why my services were less than perfect. I decided to give the shop another chance, I called in and made an appointment for Box briads. While in the chair I asked to owner, why she has suggested the box Box briads for me vs the Senegalese Twist, she informed me that she suggests hair styles based on the persons hair type and face structure etc as she wants to make sure that her customers look and feel pretty and get their money's worth when they leave her shop.

My box braids were beautiful, yet I have one more problem, why are the braids in the middle bigger than the ones in the front? The owner inform me that it's so that one may be able to pulled their hair up in different styles on the first day..I instantly laughed as I've been getting briads for a long time and I do remember not being able to even touch my braids for the first 4 days after they have been done, another benefit of being able to style my Box briads the first day is I am also am preserving my edges as due to the briads being slightly larger in the middle, my hair doesn't pull as much during styling.

Smart Braids is the FIRST African Braiding Shop In Kentucky!!! The owner is very reasonable and practices diplomacy to the best of her ability. I would like to add that most of, if not all of the women at the shop are from Africa, their first language isn't English, the primary language spoken among them is French. Sometimes when explaining things to one another or just general conversation it's easier to speak the more fluent language. If you ask then a question or make a suggestion and you feel that they don't understand you well, tell the owner she will gladly translate. The women there are all personable and and strive to perfect their craft, so feel free to make suggestions, feel free to ask them questions about them, and if you are lucky to stop by while there is food, tell them your interested, they will share.....more
